Covid-19 Streetspace Plan

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented changes to travel patterns in London and the rest of the country, with only essential journeys currently being made and social distancing requirements having to be observed at all times.

This has had a major impact on Transport for London (TfL) funding which in turn will impact a number of projects in the Borough. Despite this, TfL are looking to initiate a new programme of funds to focus on enabling London to safely transition out of lockdown, recognising both that people will not be able to use public transport as before, and that urgent action needs to be taken to adapt our streets to enable social distancing.

Therefore, the Council intends to work in partnership with residents, the Mayor of London and Transport for London to focus on the following areas:

• Temporary transport interventions to enable social distancing in town centres, on approaches to stations, outside schools etc.
• Continuing to deliver a strategic active travel network to provide a safe alternative to both public and private transport use. The emphasis here will be interventions that can be delivered quickly which, in many cases, will mean the use of temporary or experimental measures.
• Measures which mitigate possible increases in the use of private vehicles. This includes Low Traffic Neighbourhood type measures to protect neighbourhoods from additional traffic, particularly where needed to address problems with social distancing and / or road danger.

Enfield Council are considering a range of measures to help achieve these aims and will look to start some initial implementation very soon.

Owing to the urgency, some projects may be implemented without the normal level of public engagement. However, we will look to publish information about projects on this page of the engagement hub and ensure there is an opportunity to provide feedback on each of the measures we implement. Where possible we will look to notify local residents and businesses in the immediate area of any particular change.
